St Martin’s School Physical Education department has an outstanding national reputation for success. Most curriculum Physical Education lessons are taught in single gender groups, utilising exceptional indoor and outdoor facilities including two gymnasiums (one of which is a trampolining area), two multi-purpose halls, a large sports hall, extensive playing fields, a fully floodlit 3G astro-turf pitch, four all-weather cricket nets, an all-weather cricket strip and an outdoor heated swimming pool.
PE is a vital contributor to a child’s physical development and well-being and our pupils participate in a broad and balanced curriculum which ranges from table tennis to yoga and includes traditional sports such as rugby, football, basketball and netball. Progressive learning intentions combined with varied teaching strategies provide stimulating and appropriately challenging experiences for all our pupils. By setting suitably differentiated tasks, it is intended that our students, irrespective of their starting point, will enjoy success, build confidence and be motivated to further develop their individual potential.
GCSE, BTEC Level 3 and A-level Physical Education are very popular and successful options in Key Stages 4 and 5 and our A-level results have consistently placed us in the top 25% of providers nationally for pupil progress.
The Physical Education department runs an extremely rich extra-curricular programme to complement our curriculum provision. Our dedicated team of 12 staff offer practice sessions before school, at lunchtimes and after school to encourage healthy, active lifestyles and also to develop sporting excellence. In addition to this, the department regularly organises over 500 competitive sporting fixtures every year, played after school and at weekends. The 2018-2019 season was a fantastic year of sport for St Martin’s. Our U12 girls won the National Basketball Cup and our U14 mixed rounders team retained their title of National Champions. Five of our single sex basketball teams reached at least the semi-final stage of their respective year group Essex Cup competitions, with our U15 boys being crowned County Champions. Unfortunately, many of the competitions for the 2019-20 season were not completed due to COVID-19, however, our U13 girls’ cross-country team made it to the National Finals, the U14 girls’ gymnastics team were runners-up at Regionals and the U16 girls were in the Essex Cup netball semi-final.
